The ten to bring every time
- Are you on the Medical Council's Specialist Division in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery? What is your registration number?
- How many operations like mine do you do in a year?
- Where will it be done, and who gives the anaesthetic?
- Local anaesthetic, sedation or general: which do you recommend for me, and why?
- What is the full price in writing, and what isn't included?
- How many check-ups are included, and where are they?
- Who do I ring at night or at the weekend if something worries me?
- If I need a touch-up, what happens and what does it cost?
- Can I see before-and-after photos of your own patients with a build like mine?
- When can I drive, go back to work, and exercise again?

For your areas
- Is my stomach fat, loose skin, or a gap in the muscles? Would a tummy tuck suit me better?
- Will you treat my love handles and stomach together so my waist looks balanced?
- Is my thigh skin firm enough for liposuction alone? Could this be lipoedema?
- Is my upper-arm skin firm enough, or would an arm lift suit me better?
- Can my chin be done under local anaesthetic, and how long will I wear the chin strap?
- Which technique do you use on back fat, and why?
- Is my chest fat, gland tissue, or both? Will you remove gland or skin?
For your goal
- How much change is realistic for me, and how will you avoid an uneven result?
- How many HD operations have you done, and can I see results on bodies like mine?
- Should I wait until I've finished having children? Should I see a physio about my tummy muscles first?
- Is my weight stable enough? Am I likely to need skin removal as well?
- What would you suggest for me, and what are the alternatives, including doing nothing?
Before you decide
- How long should I take to think it over between this consultation and booking?
- Can I have a second consultation before I book?
Doctors' advertising in Ireland has to be accurate and truthful under the Medical Council's guide, and a doctor can only call themselves a specialist if they're on the Specialist Division of the register. You never have to book on the day.
Questions
How many consultations should I have?
At least one face-to-face with the surgeon who will operate. Many people find a second one, after time to think, helps them decide.
Should I bring someone?
It helps. A second person remembers answers you don't.
