Getting to a consultation

The day of surgery

After a general anaesthetic you need an adult to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours. From Blackrock that's a drive of about 15 minutes from the city centre in light traffic, more at rush hour. Even under local anaesthetic, plan a lift rather than the DART: you'll be sore, padded and in a compression garment.

Check-ups

Expect about 3 visits after the operation day: a wound check in the first week or two and a later review. From Blackrock to St Stephen's Green and back, that's around 1.5 hours in the car over the weeks. Ask how many check-ups are included, and whether any can be by video.

Before you book

Every doctor practising in Ireland must be registered with the Medical Council, and only a doctor with specialist registration can practise independently as a specialist. For liposuction, check for the Specialist Division entry in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery on the Medical Council's online register before you book.

Liposuction is not a weight-loss treatment: it takes away stubborn pockets of fat at a steady weight. It won't shift cellulite or stretch marks, and it doesn't tighten loose skin.
